SBA TO HEADLINE THE LET'S MOVE WASHINGTON D.C. EVENT

 WASHINGTON, DC - SEPTEMBER 30, 2014

The SBA is excited to announce its participation in the upcoming Lets Move! event in Washington, DC on October 4, 2014. The SBA has been invited to be the main attraction for the 2nd Annual Let’s Move!-DC Children and Families Health Expo from 10am to 2pm at Deanwood Recreation Center hosted by the District of Columbia Office of the State Superintendent of Education. Last year the event had over 30 vendors and 500 families in attendance! The event organizers expect twice that amount this year.

Background
Let’s Move! is First Lady Michelle Obama’s nationwide effort to combat childhood obesity and encourage healthy lifestyle choices by empowering families to put their children on the path to a healthy future during their earliest months and years. The initiative aims to inspire children to eat healthy foods and have at least 60 minutes of physical activity per day, whether before, during, or after school. The DC public school system has become the first U.S. district to fully commit to the Let’s Move! Active Schools program. All 111 DC public schools have agreed to participate in the program.

The SBA will execute basketball skills demonstrations and a basketball clinic during the Lets Move!-DC event. CEO Jerrod Mustaf will join Ward 7 Councilmember Yvette Alexander and DC Legends and All-Star Street Basketball players Hugh “Baby Shaq” Jones and Randy “White Chocolate” Gill, who will conduct the skills demonstrations and basketball clinic which are free to all attendees. In addition, Baby Shaq and White Chocolate will host a photo and autograph session for the participants at the event.  Since its inception, the SBA and its partners have proven how sports develops character, teamwork, responsibility and unity amongst participants as well as how they give renewed energy for the future and a sense of hope to the youth. The partnership between Street Basketball Association and Let’s Move!-DC is a natural springboard for these values, educating and exciting young people about physical activities and fun exercises.
